P WARP. It means promotion without a raise in pay. That’s what Marcia got when she was awarded the job of Event’s Coordinator for her company’s client appreciation banquet.
Marcia’s boss liked acoustic blues which she thought might be okay for cocktails but doubted it would fly for the dinner hour. Marcia preferred classical music but found out that a string quartet means you actually have to hire four people to play. The ballroom she rented did not own a piano; renting one was a logistical nightmare. Somebody mentioned a harp which immediately reminded her of the harpist her first husband became obsessed with for their wedding reception.
What Marcia needed was something with a pulse for the cocktail hour and later, some music to set an unobtrusive mood of formality for the dinner hour.
What Marcia got was guitarist Nathan Cage. Although she didn’t know Chicago blues from Celtic Crossover, Marcia was able to get everyone from the office involved in selecting a range of choices by listening to the clips on the website. She was able to keep the conversation lively with a revolving mix of jazz, blues, and light rock, and then tone things down with classical music during dinner. Best of all, she didn’t have to blow her boss’s budget by hiring just one musician rather than a band. |

Marcia felt so good about her decision she decided to do things exactly the same way next year. She even sent her ex the link to Nathancage.com. for a free download of guitar music. Marcia never really thought he was a bad guy; but what marriage could recover from hors d’oeuvres in the shape of a harp?
